Where is the database stored, how to backup it in some smooth way?

We use the automysqlbackup.sh obtainable from

http://sourceforge.net/projects/automysqlbackup/

This is a very good script and does a hot backup. Although we have a pre and post script. The pre script shuts down the web server and the post script starts it up again.
